We are stepping into spring with energy and enthusiasm! This year, the Turkish librarian community is celebrating the 60th National Library Week (March 25-31). This annual celebration takes place during the last week of March, highlighting the importance of libraries and their contributions to society. To mark this occasion, Koç University Libraries will be hosting two events throughout the week.
On March 26th, we will be organizing the Bibliopera Libraries Tour, visiting ten libraries. Our tour, conducted by librarians, is open and free to all researchers and librarians. Registration is mandatory, check the details here. Additionally, on March 28th, we are hosting the 3rd Career Fair. This event is open to all Information and Records Management students and newly graduated professionals in the field. Advancing Open Access Publishing: A New Era with Read and Publish Agreements
|
Read and publish agreements offer researchers a seamless pathway to both access and publish academic content. Under these agreements, institutions like ours pay a single fee to publishers, granting our researchers unrestricted access to a vast array of scholarly literature while also covering the costs associated with publishing their research in open-access and hybrid journals.
In 2024, Suna Kıraç Library will participate in 7 Read & Publish and one discount agreement with selected publishers that will enable corresponding authors to publish their articles open access in the included journals at Koç University.
These Agreements Are:
- American Chemical Society (ACS)
- Association for Computing Machinery (ACM Digital Library)
- Cambridge University Press (CUP)
- IOP (Institute of Physics) Publishing
- Oxford Journals Online
- SAGE (APC Discount)
- Springer Nature
- Wiley
In recent faculty meetings, as the Suna Kıraç Library Open Access Team, we had the opportunity to present the concept of read and publish agreements to our esteemed faculty members in the College of Sciences and the College of Engineering. Now, we are willing to share details of the agreements with all researchers at Koç University. In the coming weeks, we look forward to engaging with faculty members associated with the other colleges to discuss the benefits of read-and-publish agreements further and explore opportunities for collaboration in advancing open-access publishing.

Data Lab: You have a space for Coding and Data Visualization in the Library!
|
Data Lab is a facility of the library established to serve users who need more sophisticated computers than any public computer. The Library aims to support researchers’ needs for high-end computers with software ready to use for works like data management, GIS, statistical studies, programming, 3D design, and visualization works.
With four highly configurated computers equipped with Intel Xeon or AMD Ryzen 9 processors, high performance graphic cards and dual screens, researchers can easily run software and work on their data. The Data Lab is in Room 203-B on the second floor of the Suna Kıraç Library. Some of the essential software in the Lab:
- Statistical Analysis: R, RStudio, Python, MatLab, SPSS, Mathematica, OpenRefine

Copyright dispute over ChatGPT
|
Trails related to AI have started to increase. Interesting cases are happening. In California, a US district judge has ruled in favor of OpenAI in a lawsuit brought by authors. The authors claimed that ChatGPT was trained on pirated copies of their books without permission. However, the judge dismissed most of the claims, stating that the authors failed to prove their case. To read about the case please check here.

Hello, my name is Zeynep Camuşcu, the new reference librarian at Suna Kıraç Library. Although I'm a new member of the staff, I'm certainly not new to the library.
After graduating from Istanbul Saint Joseph French High School in 2013, I started studying history in Koç University on a full scholarship. Suna Kıraç Library, especially the basement floor where the history collection is located quickly became one of my safe havens in the campus. In 2015, I started my double major in Media and Visual Arts and specialized in Film and Video Track. Following my graduation in 2019, I worked as a freelancer editor and copywriter in a travel magazine. While planning to go abroad for my masters degree, Covid pandemic made me reconsider my decision and I started pursuing my MA degree in Comparative Studies in History and Society Program, once again in Koç University. I defended my thesis on 1960s cinema discussions in last September, thus combining my background in History and Mava programs.
As someone who is very fond of her book collection and find peace and comfort in libraries, the idea of working in a library of which I have been a regular user is very exciting. I hope to contribute to the library’s ways of communicating with its users as a former one. Moreover, I am looking forward to assist all the members of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities in their research as their new liaison librarian. On the other hand, I am well aware that not coming from an Information Management background, I have a long journey of learning ahead. This learning journey keeps me very motivated, and I already feel very supported by all the members of the SKL. I am wishing a healthy and successful semester to everyone! You may contact me at zcamuscu@ku.edu.tr.
