“Marmara” Board Game Meeting

Our first monthly event of our collaboration with the KUFRP students club was the “Marmara” Board Game Meeting.

“Marmara” card game focuses on the relationships of habitats and living things at different scales in the Marmara Sea; the actors in the play try to maintain their non-linear relationships with each other to win the game while trying to move without getting stuck on the rapidly changing map and change their environment.

“Marmara Kültürleri Ağı” Project is part of CultureCIVIC funded by European Union. The “Marmara” game has recently gained support from SAHA Sustainability Fund.

Suna Kıraç Library aimed to approach ecological problems and sustainability with the help of the game and show a different aspect to our campus community.

We thank dear Emrah Göker, who introduced Kerem Bey to us. Since we have committed gamers on our campus, there were lots of fruitful feedback for to improve the game.

Virtual Book Club

January’s book is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world.

If you are a fan of Oscar Wilde, join us at SKL First Floor Meeting Room or via zoom on January 5 at 12:30.

Moderator: Begüm Çiçek

SKL Podcast

At the Suna Kıraç Library "İstanbul'u Dinliyorum" Podcast, this month we hosted Siren Çelik in a discussion entitled "Seyyahların Gözünden 14. ve 15. Yüzyıllarda Konstantinopolis". Despite the rapid political and socio-economic collapse of the Byzantine Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries, the capital of the empire, Constantinople still was visited by many travelers.

In this talk we talked about the reasons why travelers came to Constantinople, the details in the traveler's narratives written in Latin, Spanish, Russian and Arabic, the monuments and structures of Constantinople, the daily life of Constantinople in the Late Byzantine period, and the life practices of the Paleologos emperors. You can listen to our podcast and access our other podcast episodes from the Suna Kıraç Library Spotify Account and Apple Podcast.

ANAMED Library Talks

ANAMED Library Talks organized by the ANAMED Library continues in 2023. Our January hosts are Christine Philliou, Firuzan Melike Sümertaş. The talk is entitled "Hiding in Plain Sight: The İstanΠόλις Collaborative, Reconstructing the Greek Community of 19th and early 20th century Istanbul”. In this talk the speakers will speak about how the Collaborative came to be, the scholarly questions they are addressing, the need for such a project both for scholarly and public domains, and the Digital Humanities methodologies we are developing to realize the project. They founded the İstanΠόλις Collaborative in 2020 to serve as an online hub for studies on the spatial/physical and demographic aspects of the Rum/Greek Orthodox presence in Istanbul between 1821 and 1923 and have been developing a range of Digital Humanities projects that link up to it. They will also discuss the range of archival sources they have been using and the ways they have been discussing and processing those sources together. Haris Theodorelis-Rigas will be the moderator of the talk. The talk will be in English and will take place online.
