Moving on to the second month of the Fall, we are here with one more issue of our Newsletter to welcome you all officially in the Fall semester 2020. And the month could not start with a more appropriate celebration for us all in Education, than the well-established World Teachers’ Day. Celebrated since 1994 on October 4, the day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This year’s theme is “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”, highlighting the teacher leadership in relation to crisis responses.
Here’s a big applause to all KU faculty members! Hooray!

2020 Fall Semester Library Orientation
Library orientation for newcomers is a trandition with the aim to provide basic information about the Library’s Collection, the resources, the tools and the services. We usually organize it in the Library for a whole day, enjoying the hustle and bustle of almost thousand students. This year, due to known circumstances, we prepared a video for the dear newcomers.
Through the the video we would like to show you Suna Kıraç Library spaces and services. Since we can not meet in the Library this semester we wanted a video like a virtual Library tour that will include each floor. In addition, you can find basic information about Library’s website usage, LIB101 Library orientation and the Student Ambassadors Program.
Apart from the orientation for the undergraduate newcomers, we offer several other orientation session (e.g. graduate students, exchange students, new faculty members). All, Library orientation videos can be found in our Library Video Hub.
Remember! Librarians are online during this period. You can ask your questions through many channels.

Research Support: Video Hub & Research and Instructions Program
We have many times mentioned our instructions program and the research support we can offer to the whole KU community. With the new semester starting today and without being able to physically welcome you in KU Libraries, here is a brief presentation of our instruction sessions and research consultation service.
As of last March, we have been offering all our seminars and workshops online, in the form of webinars. You can find several of them in the Library Video Hub. But this not just it… Our instructions calendar will be filled with live sessions covering different topics and education needs – select the sessions that best apply to your profile and register!
You can also get individualized help that fits with your schedule with our Liaison Librarians. Schedule an appointment for a research consultation using the online request form.

October is known for the OpenAccess Week
The 2020 Open Access Week Advisory Committee announces that the theme for this year’s International Open Access Week, to be held October between 19-25, will be “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion.” Openness can be a powerful tool for building more equitable systems of sharing knowledge. Rebuilding research and scholarship to be open by default presents a unique opportunity to construct a foundation that is fundamentally more equitable. Yet today, structural racism, discrimination, and exclusion are present and persistent in places where openness is a core value. As a global community, it is important to understand that the systems and spaces of the present are often built upon legacies of historic injustice and that addressing these inequities is a necessity.
Building on the discussions in 2018 (“Designing Equitable Foundations for Open Knowledge”) and 2019 (“Open for Whom? Equity in Open Knowledge”), 2020 marks the third consecutive year the theme for International Open Access Week will focus on the urgent need for action on equity and inclusion, underscoring the urgency of continuing to center this work. International Open Access Week is a time for the wider community to coordinate in taking action to make openness the default for research and to ensure that equity is at the center of this work. This year's Open Access Week will be held from October 19th through the 25th; however, organizers are encouraged to host discussions and take action around this year’s theme whenever is most suitable during the year and to adapt the theme and activities to their local context. This is especially true for this year with the varying levels of disruption due to COVID-19. Meet our Staff: Archives Team
Senem Acar - Archive Specialist
Holding a Master of Art from Duke University in musicology and a Master of Library and Information Science at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, I joined SKL in 2014. Before SKL, I have worked at Duke University David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library in The Frank Foster Papers, the International Monitor Institute Records, 1986-2006, and Women’s Liberation Movement Documents collections and in the cataloging department of the UNCG Library. As archive specialist at SKL, my responsibilities range from processing physical archives, through handling digital projects such as:
and , to assisting researchers about how to get and use our archival materials. Here we mainly focus on collecting, preserving and digitizing cultural heritage archives and special collections which have cultural, historical and intellectual significance.
Dealing with special collections is a long-haul effort requiring a close follow-up with digitization colleagues, collaborating with subject specialists to curate materials, promoting the projects on the web- in other words, from the beginning till the end, it is a result of a team work. In the process, international graduate students who came to SKL as interns in the past as well as our work&study students who join our projects every semester make a great contribution and we enjoy their presence around.
Our digital collections also provide a proper platform to display intellectual output for our students, later included our digital collections such as the Sounds of Istanbul, and Echoes of Industrial Heritage collection. Showcasing their projects, we are always open to incoming ideas of our students as well as faculty to display their scholarly content. A great pleasure to guide and assist on organizing and managing their own personal collections and projects.

Mustafa Ergül - Archive Specialist
Hi all, this is Mustafa Ergül, I'm a sociologist and art historian. I have been working at Suna Kıraç Library as an archive specialist since 2017 and also, I continue my Phd studies in the department of Art History at Istanbul University. As an archive specialist, I am in charge of special collections and academic and non-academic archives which are accessible at https://librarydigitalcollections.ku.edu.tr/en/.
It is always exciting to work with the primary sources and deal with different kinds of archival materials such as letters, maps, dairies, personal documents, sound recording, sketches or digital files. On the other hand, the position comes with length responsibilities such as conducting collection processes such as organization, classification, digitization, identification and preservation of the materials in the collections. I also take part in talks, conduct webinars and create digital exhibitions about the special collections in the library.
To me, each collection is a new adventure and a new challenge at the same time in terms of encountering the different contents, different expressions and different periods of history which keeps you motivated to improve yourself intellectually and professionally as well.

Suna Kıraç: In Memory of a Great Turkish Business Woman – Digital Collection
In September, we were deeply saddened by the loss of a prominent businesswoman, philanthropist, and art collector, a member of our family, Suna Kıraç. One the four children of Koç family, Suna Koç was born in Keçiören, Ankara in 1941, graduated from Arnavutköy Girls Private High School and studied banking and finance at Boğaziçi University. She served as Koç Holding Board of Directors vice chair, Vehbi Koç Foundation (VKV) Executive Committee chair and Board of Directors member. She was a founding member and chair of the board of directors of Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation. She was member of Koç University (KU) and chair of the executive board of the Koç School, a founding member and honorary president of TEGV.[1] A memorable philanthropist who has left a great mark in business world, but also devoted her life to the development of this country through her charity work in arts, culture, education and health, Kıraç will always be remembered with respect and gratitude. She established TEGV, AKMED, Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation, Pera Museum, NDAL and Istanbul Research Institute, Koç High school and Koç University along with other family members.
As Suna Kıraç Library, we are paying our respect by preparing a digital exhibition comprising archival material from several sources over the years. Most of the photographs come from Koç University Collection of Institutional Memory (KU-CIM), Vehbi Koç Press Clippings Collection and Kıraç, S., Akar, R., & Suna ve İnan Kıraç Vakfı. Browsing the digital exhibition, you can see Suna Kıraç in Koç University Board of Trustees and Overseers meeting, in Koç University outstanding student’s awards ceremony, in the Rumelifeneri Campus construction, in attending students’ awards ceremony of Koç Holding "Bizden Haberler" Magazine and more.

Come Join our Student Ambassadors Team!
The Student Ambassadors Program was launched in 2016 and is a great opportunity to work within a “professional” framework and therefore, gain valuable experience in team work. Our Student Ambassadors prepared blog posts, organized Book Club Talks, helped game and mindfulness events, planned storytelling sessions and read books for our little ones, prepared book exhibitions, designed many posters for our events and so on. So, we have been busy!
We are looking for new members and fresh ideas for the SA Program.

ANAMED Library Talks
ANAMED Library’s monthly talks series continued in September with M. Baha Tanman (Istanbul Research Institute). The talk focused on the Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha Mansion, one of the rare civil architectural structures that has survived from the late 17th century and is included in the "Ottoman Buildings" section of the Cahide Tamer Historical Buildings Restoration Projects Collection, which was donated to Suna Kıraç Library in 2018. The talk was moderated by our colleague Mustafa Ergül, the curator of Cahide Tamer collection, and the recording can be found in ANAMED Library’s SoundCloud Account.
October’s talk will host another prominent scholar, Edhem Eldem, who will discuss about a voluminous set of documents consisting of memoirs, diaries and various writings of Şehzade Selahaddin Efendi (1861-1915) under the moderation of prof.
