Get Support to Prepare a Data Management Plan for the TÜBİTAK Projects!

TÜBİTAK Open Science Policy, which was created within the framework of the management, storage, archiving, compilation, and digital protection of publications and research data produced from projects carried out or supported by TÜBİTAK, was discussed and accepted at the meeting of the TÜBİTAK Board of Directors on 14.03.2019.

The process started with ARDEB 1001 projects but now requires the preparation of a data management plan for all types of projects of TÜBİTAK. This policy includes publications (peer-reviewed articles, etc.) and research data produced with the support of TÜBITAK, wholly or partially, as well as publications and research data of TÜBITAK researchers.

It is possible to reach the purpose, scope, and principles of the TÜBİTAK Open Science Policy online. In line with the principles of this policy, the other application of the "Data Management Plan" regarding your project proposal must be uploaded to the Project Application System along with your documents.

For a detailed explanation of the terms in the data management plan, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM “Research Data Management Training” offered at https://acikveri.ulakbim.gov.tr Portal” can be used. Sharing the data produced during the project in APERTA, which is TÜBİTAK’s Open Archive, will enable the verification of the research results and/or the re-use of the data for new research and is recommended by TÜBİTAK to researchers. APERTA can be reached at https://aperta.ulakbim.gov.tr/.

New Libguide on Read & Publish Agreements

The Library has several “Read and Publish” deals that allow Koç University corresponding authors to publish open access in selected journals without payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC).

Read & Publish Agreements allow researchers to publish Open Access, with no Article Processing Charges (APCs), when the corresponding author for the article is at a participating institution. The Koç University has subscribed to 3 Read & Publish agreements that will enable authors to publish their articles in selected open-access journals. These Agreements Are:

• Cambridge University Press (CUP)
• American Chemical Society (ACS)
• Association for Computing Machinery (ACM Digital Library)

EBSCO eBooks Academic Collection

This multidisciplinary database includes more than 225.000 e-books with a large selection of academic subjects from leading publishers and university presses such as Cambridge University Press, De Gruyter, Elsevier, Harvard University Press, John Wiley & Sons, Oxford University Press, Sage Publications, and Taylor & Francis.

Most of the titles are available with unlimited user access to read online or download, and with its advanced interface, Ebook Academic Collection Database allows you to search for keywords inside the ebook, create and export citations, and save your favorite books.

SKL Book Club 2023 Survey Results

The Suna Kıraç Library Book Club meetings allow us to meet the KU Community even if they are not on the campus or even in İstanbul. You can join our meetings at SKL First Floor Meeting Room or with zoom.

SKL Manuscript Collection was Presented in Samarkand

Suna Kıraç Library Director Tuba Akbaytürk Çanak participated “International Forum on Central Asia – Center for Islamic Art” in Samarkand, Uzbekistan between 1 -3 November 2022. As an invited speaker, she introduced Koç University Library Manuscript Collection and shared her experiences about how to run a successful preservation and digitization project.

The event was organized by Imam Buhari International Scientific Research Center with the support of the Uzbek Ministry of Tourism and Culture. In this event, esteemed scholars and librarians from Central Asia had opportunity to meet and start a dialog which will shape the future of the cultural heritage work in the region.

International Games Month Event at SKL

National Games Day started in 2007 to set a world record for the number of people playing the same game at the same time at libraries worldwide. National Games Day became International Games Day (IGD) in 2012, International Games Week (IGW) in 2017, and finally, International Games Month (IGM) in 2022.

Suna Kıraç Library has joined the International Games Week (now International Games Month) event since 2017. Since the beginning, this event has been organized with the help of the KU FRP Student Club and dear Emrah Göker.

This year we organized a three-day event on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of November in the Library Seminar Room. In addition to board games, there were Nintendo games played.

We thank all the supporters and participants for making the event joyful.

Managing Your References with EndNote, Mendeley & Zotero

Reference Management Tools help scholars to create and manage their lists of references for research projects. Most tools are designed to organize citations into specific formats for the preparation of manuscripts and bibliographies.

Learn how to manage your references, organize your research and quickly create citations and bibliographies using a citation management program. The online session will cover an introduction to EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley; the similarities and differences between different citation management programs; and how to choose the right citation manager for you. You'll leave knowing the next steps for installing and using a citation manager.

There will be breakout rooms on Zoom for EndNote 20, Mendeley & Zotero.

Discovering Full-Text (Primary) Source Databases

In this webinar, Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG), Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum (SEG), and Patrologia Graeca (PG) databases’ will be introduced. All three databases contain primary sources of authors and texts from Ancient Greece and Late Antiquity. By the end of the webinar, you will become familiar with the three databases and explore how to use the different tools. This will allow you to easily research and use primary sources of the ancient world.

Treasure Gallery Series - 7: Nursing Education in Turkey and Admiral Bristol Nursing School

The 7th theme of Koç University Libraries Treasury Series, “Nursing Education in Turkey and Admiral Bristol Nursing School” will continue in December by focusing on the development of nursing education in Turkey, research in this field, and the contribution of Admiral Bristol School of Nursing to the history of nursing.

On Wednesday, December 14, we will have a pleasant conversation about the school with the speakers from the Admiral Bristol Nursing School Alumni Association. On Tuesday, December 29, we will organize a webinar on the History of Nursing in Turkey.

Virtual Book Club

December’s book is Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. This is a 2005 dystopian science fiction novel, and it was shortlisted for the 2005 Man Booker Prize, for the 2006 Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award.

SKL Podcast

At the Suna Kıraç Library "İstanbul'u Dinliyorum" Podcast, this month we hosted İhsan Erdinçli in a discussion entitled "Osmanlı İstanbul’unda Meyhaneler ve Müdavimler". In this episode, we talk about the taverns of Ottoman Istanbul, the indispensable regulars of taverns, the changes in taverns over time, the factors that shape the state and society's approach to taverns, the bans on taverns enacted by the Ottoman state and the effects of these bans on society.

We focused on the effects of the 19th century's era of change, especially after the abolition of the Janissary Corps in 1826, on the effects of both taverns and regulars, how the state changed the point of view towards alcohol consumption and taverns, and the acceptance alcohol consumption among the Ottoman elite as an indicator of "civilization". ANAMED Library Talks

ANAMED Library Talks organized by the ANAMED Library continues in December with Cemal Kafadar, Gülru Necipoğlu, Cornell Fleischer. The talk is entitled "Treasures of Knowledge: An Inventory of the Ottoman Palace Library”. In this talk the three speakers will discuss their jointly edited publication on an inventory of manuscripts kept in the book treasury of the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. This unique inventory was commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Bayezid II from his royal librarian ʿAtufi in the year 908 (1502–3) and was transcribed in a clean copy in 909 (1503–4). The inventory is preserved in the Oriental Collection of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MS Török F. 59). It records over 5,000 volumes, and more than 7,000 titles, on virtually every branch of human erudition at the time.

Diamas Project Successfully Launched

The Diamas project was successfully launched at the Diamond Open Access Conference on September 19 and 20 in Zadar. The Horizon Europe project called ‘Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication’ (DIAMAS), coordinated by OpenEdition, Aix-Marseille University. The 3-year project, which was awarded a grant of €3m, brings together 23 European organizations that will map out the landscape of Diamond Open Access publishing in the European Research Area and develop common standards, guidelines and practices for the Diamond publishing sector. The project partners will also formulate recommendations for research institutions to coordinate sustainable support for Diamond publishing activities across Europe.

Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature

Children's literature has a rich history. Books written, illustrated, and published for young readers skyrocket in popularity during the 19th century. They have remained a mainstay of the publishing industry ever since. From primers meant to teach spelling and math to fairy tales, these books can tell historians and modern readers a lot about the mores of a given time. Now, anyone can explore over 7,000 historic titles online through the University of Florida’s Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature.

The online archive features countless books available for reading online or downloading. Many date to the 19th century, while others were published through the 1950s. Titles range from Pretty Little Stories for Pretty Little People to the classic Cinderella. Topics range from Biblical stories to school subjects to sweet animal tales.

Prepare and Submit Strong Manuscripts with ACS Author Lab

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society has released a new course, “ACS Author Lab,” designed to help authors prepare and submit strong manuscripts, speeding up the publication process. ACS Author Lab is a free online training course that empowers authors to prepare and submit strong manuscripts, avoiding errors that could lead to delays in the publication process. The course has been developed by ACS Editors and ACS Publications staff to help authors identify key considerations for each step of publishing a manuscript.
