Continue to get support from Suna Kıraç Library via Virtual Reference Service! This service is providing drop-in virtual reference hours. Join us for virtual reference sessions via Zoom to learn more about research, citation, locating online materials, using Library resources, and many more! You do not need to make an appointment. Access Financial Times Wherever You Go!

We are happy to announce that the upgraded access of Financial Times (FT) is now available! All library users may now create a personal account and access Financial Times. For creating a personal account, click on the the "Subscribe" menu on ft.com and "Koç University has FT subscription" information will appear on the screen. After filling out the form, you will have unlimited access to Financial Times. With your Financial Times account, you will also have access from your mobile application and off-campus. For questions about the e-resources, you can always contact us at a liberesources@ku.edu.tr.



Treasure Gallery: Daily Life in Byzantine Istanbul

In 2021 Koç University Libraries initiated a new project entitled "Treasure Gallery”. This project aims to feature valuable and extensive collections located at the Koç University Libraries through various themes. The last theme of 2021 was “Daily Life in Byzantine Istanbul”. It had a focus on 3 sub-categories of daily life in Byzantine period, and each category was explored for a month; “architecture and public space” in October, “arts and crafts” in November, culture (cuisine, entertainment and music) in December. The theme aimed at introducing the related resources such as rare books, archival materials and print collections at the Koç University Libraries to a wider audience through various talks and podcasts on each categories.


Suna Kıraç Library Podcast

At this month’s Suna Kıraç Library “İstanbul'u Dinliyorum” Podcast, we hosted Fatma Coşkuner in a discussion entitled “İstanbul’a Karadeniz’den Bakmak: Ayvazovski Üzerine Alternatif Bir Değerlendirme”. In this episode, we discussed about Armenian-Russian romantic painter, Ivan Aivazovsky’s Istanbul, his relationships, visits during the reigns of Sultan Abdülmecid, Abdülaziz and Abdülhamid II, and his paintings in the museums of Istanbul. Coşkuner gave examples from the 19th century Ottoman painting art and visual culture of Empire. Mindfulness Event

For the preparation of an online mindfulness events program between 3-7 January, Suna Kıraç Library (SKL) is working with the students who are part of the University Innovation Fellows (UIF) and Global Learning and Leadership for Sustainability (GLLS). The aim of those events is to help you develop stress relief, concentration & focus improvement skills. The events will include yoga exercises, mindfulness and stress management workshops, and other the techniques that will help you relaxing.

SKL Book Club

SKL Book Club Talks will continue in 2022 with the suggestions of the KU Community. We prepared a survey for KU Community to choose books and determine the format. 77 people from KU Community participated in this survey. According to our survey result, SKL Book Club Talk events will be held online on a Thursday of every month between 19:00-20:00. The most selected books were;

  • The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller
  • Don Quixote - Miguel de Cervantes
  • Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
  • Diary of a Madman - The Overcoat - The Nose - Nikolay Vasilievich Gogol

We thank all the KU members who participated in the survey and shared their thoughts with us.

Join us in our "1st Book Club Meeting" of 2022 with The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, which was awarded the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2012. It is an adaptation of Homer's Iliad, told from the perspective of Patroclus. The book tells the epic of the Trojan War of kings, gods, and warriors through the eyes of two lovers.

ANAMED Library Talks

ANAMED Library Talks is continuing with Asa Eger and Andrea DeGiorgi on January 11, 2022. In this talk, Asa Eger and Andrea DeGiorgi will discuss about their book, “Antioch: A history” and the journey of writing this book. The moderator of the talk will be Charles Gates. The talk will be held online and in English.

ANAMED Library Podcast

This month’s guest of the library themed ANAMED Library Podcast: Burada Konuşmak Serbest for December was Vitali Hakko Creative Industries’ Library curator, trainer and author Begüm Başoğlu Öner. Ankara State Conservatory Collection

In the Ankara State Conservatory (also known as Musiki Muallim Mektebi) Collection, is the collection of the first state conservatory of Republic of Turkey. Musiki Muallim Mektebi was founded in 1924, and an educational institution which played a leading role in the modernization of Turkey. Osman Zeki Üngör was the first director of the conservatory. In 1936 it was converted to Ankara State Conservatory and today it still functions as a conservatory. In the collection there are approximately 15000 materials comprised of different type of documents. The collection includes; student application and institution’s correspondence letters. The materials in the collection plays an important role in terms of reflecting the educational progress between 1925 – 1956. The collection’s digitization process of archival materials is still continuing. Currently, all student application letters of 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1937 years are available online. The digitization process of the collection is planned to be completed in few years.


VEKAM Ömür Bakırer Collection

The collection donated by Prof. Dr. Ömür Bakırer contains 3852 slides, which includes archaeological and architectural history field studies conducted in Ankara, Istanbul and various regions of Anatolia between 1960-1990. The slides have images of many buildings such as mosques, madrasahs, churches, inns, covered bazaars, fountains, baths, castles and archaeological sites. The slides have been digitized. Archival work on the project is continuing. The collection will be made available to researchers in 2022.



UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science

The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science provides an international plan for open science policy. The plan recognizes disciplinary and regional differences in open science perspectives. It considers academic freedom, gender-transformative approaches and the specific challenges of scientists and other open science actors in different countries and in developing countries, and contributes to reducing the digital, technological and knowledge divides existing between and within countries.
