One more Fall is here, for the academic community always signifying the fresh new start! September is not an easy month after the relaxing moments of summer vacation but, it is a month that activates us to continue with our tasks and start new ones.

As the 2021 Fall semester starts, we would like to welcome you all at KU and we are looking forward seeing you visiting all Libraries and make use of the available resources and services. We will have more details on our re-opening policy, tools, resources, services and activities in October’s issues, once everyone has settled.

This issue is devoted to our monthly activity of Newsletters, as we have reached the 225^th issue!!! Our aim is to keep you updated with news and share important information and we promise to continue with the necessary updates and improvements. Your opinion and feedback is more than welcomed!

SKL Podcast

At the Suna Kıraç Library “İstanbul'u Dinliyorum” Podcast, this month we host Müjde Dila Gümüş in a discussion titled “Esir Şehrin Mimarları: İstanbul’un İşgal Yıllarında Türk Mimarlar ve Çalışmaları”. In this episode, we talk about the architects of the occupation years in İstanbul (1918-1923) Vedat Bey, one of the senior architects of the occupation years, and Kemalettin Bey, architect at the beginning of his profession. We also focus on how the architectural life of Istanbul was affected by the occupation and how the architectural heritage of the city was documented during the occupation years in İstanbul. ANAMED Library Talk

ANAMED Library talks, host Anthony Kaldellis on September 14, 2021. Byzantine Studies is exceptional among academic disciplines in that it refuses to call the society that it studies and its people by its proper name – Romanía and the Romans. It is well understood that the term “Byzantium” is a modern construct, but the politics of its invention remain unexplored. Why do we have that category at all? Whose interests did it serve? Should we still use it? This presentation will explore how the Great Powers of the nineteenth century created “Byzantium,” and the key role of the Greek War of Independence and Crimean War in that process. At stake was not only the ownership of classical Greece and Rome, which the west claims for itself, but the security of the nineteenth-century imperial order itself. Staff Member Retiring

Dr. Canan Ergün, Web Services Coordinator is retiring after 25 years at Koç University Library and 30 years in the profession. Canan started her career as a cataloger at İstanbul Technical University and joined SKL in 1995. After her years as a cataloger, she started a new career in library automation and became a systems librarian, spending the most part of entire career supporting use of technology in libraries. Canan’s expertise includes but is not limited to the administration of our library automation system, digital asset management system, the library’s website and the maintenance of the technical equipment.

Canan has been a mentor for many librarians and library science students. She tirelessly trained them on how to use the technology for higher efficiency. Her guidance and willingness to share what she knows have always be appreciated and her friendship and good humor will always be remembered. We are truly going to miss Canan and we will always remember her contribution to SKL and to the profession. We wish her happy retirement!

Farewell

Vasia Mole, the Head Librarian of ANAMED Library is leaving soon to return to Greece after 6 years of service at Koç University. Prior to her role as reference librarian at Suna Kıraç Library, Vasia had been involved in large automation projects in Greece as project manager. Vasia worked as a library liaison to the College of Administrative Sciences and Economics and to ELC. She was also the contact point for OIP. She was the team leader for the very successful International Library Staff week for three years in a row. She did exceptional job in introducing Suna Kıraç Library worldwide. Her podcast series in English opened new doors for the Library. Vasia will always be remembered as a good communicator, good mentor, good trainer and especially as a good friend. Although she will be across the Aegean Sea, we are very confident that we will find the common ground to work on mutual projects and that she will be a library ambassador between the two countries. We wish her every success in her new role!

2 New Positions in the Library

We are happy to announce that we are looking for 2 new professionals to join our team. SKL is a strong team of more than 20 staff members, skilled in different areas. With these new positions we are aiming at adding more diversity in the expertise of our team and further support our operations and meet our goals. The new positions are for a Reference Librarian who will serve as Liaison for Science departments and for Data visualization expert. We are looking forward to receiving applications. We will update you with news once new members have joined us.

NIT Library Inventory Control

Through the frequent control of the print collection, libraries ensure the maintenance of the collection and they proceed with corrections and improvements. During July 2021, İrem Ünal, our colleague at NIT Library, controlled the print collection of 12.000 volumes. The process consisted of scanning all books, entering the data into the Library system and at the last stage, working with the automated report that shows misplaced and missing books and other related data. The inventory control is being held every 2 years, with the next being scheduled for the summer 2023.

Project MUSE Introduces Ai-Based Links, Powered by Unsilo, for Related Content

Project MUSE is partnering with UNSILO, a Cactus Communications (CACTUS) brand that develops artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions for publishers, to implement robust new AI-driven content recommendations throughout its massive collection of books and journals in the humanities and social sciences. UNSILO recently completed the initial indexing of the Project MUSE content collection and enhanced related content recommendations appear throughout the platform. The UNSILO Recommender API automatically identifies links to relevant content from the MUSE content corpus for any selected document (book chapter or journal article). The indexing is updated every 24 hours as new content is added to MUSE. Links are delivered to the platform in real time, enriching the user experience and providing relevance-ranked discovery that augments the learning experience. Over 250 concepts are extracted from every document, and then matched by rank with related material.

CiteScore: 10 Years of Metrics

The 2020 CiteScore metrics have just been released, and they’re being more widely used than ever. For researchers, librarians and authors, these metrics contribute to a more comprehensive, transparent and current view and provide a more nuanced understanding of what impact means for research and journals. CiteScore provides insights into the citation impact of nearly 26,000 titles and you can read the full article to find some key reasons CiteScore is good news for the research community.
