March, always the starting point of Spring and the beginning of the educational Spring Semester, brings hope and motivation, energy and optimism. This newsletter issue is here to remind you of some important Library services and brings to you news about Library sources and activities.

As we are all getting busy with the needs and demands of the research and teaching process, remember that you can always rely on the Library staff of all KU Libraries for effective support, even in an online modality.

Important Services to Remember During the Spring Semester

A major Library service to the KU community, is the educational role of the Library. Our established educational program is being scaled throughout the academic year. Sessions include instructions, seminars, workshops and presentations designed specifically to meet the needs of a class, group or an individual. All sessions are listed in an online calendar making it easy for someone to browse, select the session/-s they are interested in and register. Browse the offered sessions, click on the ones you are interested in and register.

Since March 2020, many of the recorded Zoom sessions are included in the Library Video Hub and are available for the KU community. While offering new, live sessions every semester, we have also made available most of them, for you to watch at your convenience if you need to refresh your memory and be reminded of important research tips or Library sources.

Being physically closed to the users, consequently means no access to the print collection. To remedy this need, we have initiated a mediated book lending service for all Graduate Students and Faculty members until the re-opening. To request material, you can use the online form, based on the material location:

Library Trackit

We introduced this new service in the previous issue but, with the new semester rolling, we would like to remind you again.

We have listed all Library major services and operations in the Trackit system, creating an easy to use, more efficient and faster flow. This systematic direction and control of the processes transforms your requests into successfully resolved outputs. Instead of sending an us an email, place your requests using the Library Trackit and monitor the progress until it is resolved.

Discover the Open Access Journal Database: DergiPark

One of the important supporters of the Open Access (OA) Movement in Turkey is Dergipark, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM and TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM’s Open Access database, aiming to improve the quality and aid the development of academic publishing in Turkey in accordance with international standards and enhance the visibility and usage of national academic journals worldwide. Dergipark is a useful database for researchers by providing almost 2000 academic journals published in Turkey with online hosting services and an editorial workflow management system via the DergiPark platform. In Dergipark, researchers read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles in national academic journals with free online access.

The subject areas covered are Environmental Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Engineering, Multidisciplinary Sciences, Basic Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences, Agriculture Humanities, Multidisciplinary, Religion, Education and Educational Research, Law, Public Administration, Hospitality Leisure Sport and Tourism, Art, Political Science. Ankara Landscape Paintings and Painters Collection

This digital collection is an initiative from the research project “Paintings and Painters as Documents of City History: Ankara Landscapes”, by Dr. Feyza Akder, VEKAM’s post-doc researcher. It started with 1408 landscape paintings and it consists of 3 main groups: painters born before 1945, paintings, and exhibitions. A book will be published regarding the project in late 2021 and the collection will be opened to access after the publication. However, due to copyright restrictions in some paintings, only metadata information will be accessible. The collection will be accessible through the Koc University Digital Collections and VEKAM Digital Collections.

Journal Citation Report Early Access Content 2021

An increasing number of journals publish articles online prior to their formal inclusion as part of a scheduled volume/issue; this is often referred to as ‘Early Access’ and represents the version of record. Committing to support open research, the 2021 edition of the JCR will include Early Access content and will be included in the metrics provided – including the Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF). Suna Kıraç Library Virtual Book Club Talks continue with “The Cat Who Saved Books” by Sosuke Natsukawa. The Japanese bestseller novel was translated in Turkish by Hüseyin Can Erkin. Unfortunately, there is no English translation yet. That’s why this virtual talk will be held in Turkish.

ANAMED Library - March talk

Strange cases, occult sciences and magic create a new field in the history of Ottoman science and culture. Although nature and the supernatural are clearly separate spaces for us today, in pre-modern cultures this boundary was vaguer: the differences between the known and the unknown on one hand, and the cyclical nature of things and the miracles on the other hand, were more important. This talk hosts the contributor researchers of the GHOST Project, to discuss about the so-called supernatural events and cases in the Ottoman Empire. The talk will be moderated by Marinos Sariyannis, the team leader and the Research Director of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies in Rethymno (Crete).

ANAMED Library February Podcast: Burada Konuşmak Serbest

At the archives talk of this month's ANAMED Library Podcast, we hosted Mr. Işık Kansu, journalist, writer and chairman of the Ismail Hakkı Tonguc Archives Foundation. During our talk we discussed the foundation of the archives, the documents about Ismail Hakkı Tonguc and the Village Institutes, the role of the fire at the Ministry of Education building in 1947 to the education history in Turkey, and the future projects of the foundation.

The guest of our Library related February podcast was Prof. Dr. Suha Özkan, who founded the "Bodrum Architecture Library". Our guest explained how he decided to create the Bodrum Architecture Library, provided information about the collection, the researchers who visit the library and some future plans. Living in Bodrum himself, he gave un an insight of the relationship between the local people and the library.

Updated Libguides for the Health Sciences

Libguides are online manuals we use to provide you with useful information in your research on a variety of topics. All of them have been prepared by librarians who are experts in the field. There are 13 guides prepared in this way in the field of Health Sciences and this number is increasing with the addition of new topics.

In 2020, 3 new guides were created in this field.With the start of the Covid-19 outbreak, we prepared a "Covid-19" libguide where you can get reliable information on this subject. In addition, we recently added resources related to vaccination studies to this guide. In the newly added guides we can also count the "New Faculty Guide for Health Sciences Faculties" guide and the "Medical Humanities Research Guide" for faculty members who have just started working at Koç University.

Meet our staff: Health Sciences Library Team

Ertaç Nebioğlu - Head of the Health Sciences Library

Hello everyone, I am Ertaç and I am serving as Head of the Health Sciences Library (HSL).

My first encounter with the Suna Kıraç Library was in 2011, working as a part-time Circulation Assistant while I was a student of Istanbul University Information and Document Management. After working in this position for a year, I graduated from the university. After a short break, I returned to Koç University in 2013 as a Branch Librarian at the School of Nursing Library. I worked there from 2013 to 2015. Since 2015, I have been working in the HSL.

As the HSL, we serve the staff, students and faculty members of the Health Sciences departments. In addition, since our library is located at the Koç University Hospital, we also support the doctors and nurses who work here, in their research.

I am interested in topics such as research support, educational services, reference management tools, scientific publications and bibliometric analysis, as the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing Liaison librarian. Recently, I have been supporting researchers in the systematic review process. If you are a student (undergraduate-graduate) or a Faculty member in the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing, I can can you with questions about the library services, your studies and research.

At the HSL we are working together with the librarian and my friend İlknur Erkin and we are here to serve you in the best way possible.

I am İlknur Erkin, the branch librarian at the Health Sciences Library (HSL) at Koç University Hospital. I am working with Ertaç Nebioğlu, the head librarian of the health sciences library. I am responsible for tasks such as the cataloging of the new HSL resources and maintaining the collection order, managing the social media accounts, preparing the HSL monthly newsletter, processing e-reserve requests, controlling databases and some other technical issues. In addition, one of the things I love to do is to provide articles for you, through your article requests, support your resource needs and find answers to your questions.
