Welcome

With August marking the end of summer, yet the most summery and relaxing month, we are getting ready for the new semester.

Reading our current issue, you will see that we are actively working, completing tasks even distantly and also, we are trying to benefit from the long closure. A big task for all Koç University Libraries is the creation and implementation of a re-opening policy. As we are all expected to resume our operations adjusted to the new norms, a well-prepared plan is of outmost importance for the safety of staff and users. We have been revising cases from international libraries and institutions to learn good practices and we have been working closely with the KU COVID-19 task force to ensure we comply with hygienic and other measures and precautions.

See you all soon!

Meet our Staff: Acquisitions

Bilge Ulutürk – Acquisitions and Gifts Assistant Specialist

Bilge Ulutürk Hello all! I began working at the Koc University Suna Kıraç Library in 2001 as a Circulation Services Assistant. Since 2014 I have been working at the library’s Acquisition Department. My responsibilities include different tasks, with main focus and priority to provide both printed and electronic resources that faculty members, students, university staff and branch libraries request. In addition, I’m responsible to inform the users when the resources they have requested, have arrived at the library.

I also aid in budget management and I prepare the necessary financial reports. Other related tasks are the requests pertaining to travel, stationery, event organizations, etc. by the Suna Kıraç library and the branches, which I follow up and record the invoices of the expenses.

Another part of my tasks is the donations we receive at the library. I oversee all parts of the donations process, by contacting donors at home and abroad concerning books to be donated to our library, I arrange transportation for books arriving to the library, I prepare documents related to customs procedures and check the lists of books to be donated.
Busy life, isn’t it?!

You can always reach me at buluturk@ku.edu.tr

********************

Muharrem Yıldız Hello! I’m Muharrem and I have been working at the Suna Kıraç library for the last 15 years. I started working as a circulation assistant for 5 months in 2005 and later, in January 2006, I started to follow the printed periodicals and newspapers we receive at the Library.

I love my job!

I process the magazines and add them in the library’s automation system according to their issued periods (monthly, few times per year, etc.). According to their page numbers and cover dates, I send those publications to binder to make their conditions stronger and accessible from the main collection. I always look around the library to see which publications users read more frequently and I keep their statistics and records.

When there is need, I also support the library’s service desks to help the users with their queries and other requests. Last, but not least, I keep track of the library's stationery needs and incoming-outgoing posts and cargos.

You can always reach me at myildiz@ku.edu.tr

cOAlition S Develops “Rights Retention Strategy” to Safeguard Researchers’ Intellectual Ownership Rights!

Plan S is an initiative for Open Access publishing that was launched in September 2018. The plan is supported by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funders. Plan S requires that, from 2021, scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms.

Publishers commonly require authors to sign exclusive publishing agreements which restrict what authors can do with their research findings, including making articles Open Access in line with their funders’ requirements. To address this problem, cOAlition S has developed a Rights Retention Strategy, which will empower their funded researchers to publish in their journal of choice, including subscription journals, and provide Open Access in compliance with Plan S.

One of the three Plan S routes to achieve full and immediate Open Access is via repositories, where, as a minimum, the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) is made openly available under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence or equivalent, without any embargo.

“The COVID-19 crisis has clearly shown that embargo periods are indefensible. No private or business interests can justify that new and original research results are held back for 6 or 12 months from other scientists, practitioners, governments and authorities, medical staff, patients and patient associations – especially those who are economically disadvantaged, who cannot afford expensive access tolls”, emphasizes Marc Schiltz, President of Science Europe and Chair of the cOAlition S Leaders Group.

The Rights Retention Strategy is designed to ensure that all cOAlition S funded scholarly publications are available as Open Access. In practical terms, it enables researchers to retain sufficient intellectual ownership rights in their work to make the AAM Open Access at the time of publication with a CC BY license.

New Calculation Method in TUBITAK UBYT Program (Incentive Program for International Scientific Publications Originating from Turkey)

TUBITAK’s Incentive Program for International Scientific Publications Originating from Turkey (UBYT), which has made important contributions to adopting the habit of publishing in international indexes in our country, has been updated to improve the quality of broadcasting, which is one of the most important objectives of the program. With this in mind, an analysis of the current system and the UBYT data of the previous years was made and the related evaluation report was sent to all university libraries. In addition to the findings and recommendations of the study, meetings were held with the Vice Rectors of the research universities to update the UBYT program and the opinions and recommendations in the meetings were taken into consideration in the design of the new UBYT program.

Regulations made on UBYT Principles include many new procedures for the use of resources to incentivize quality. New procedures can be read in the TÜBİTAK UBYT Program

Book Hunting in Summer Days: 2020 Collection Inventory Control

Each of Koç University Libraries hosts a significant print collection you can all benefit from. Due to the extensive use of our print resources, it is essential to “tidy up” the collections every 2 years.

If the pandemic benefited us somehow this is it! With the Libraries being closed, we have the time and the ability to control our collections thoroughly. The first phase of the process was to scan all items. The second phase includes detailed control of each and every book to make necessary re-shelving, find books with wrong location and identify any other mistakes.

The inventory control will be completed soon and this will help you while browsing for materian on the shelves.

We would like to kindly remind you to not re-shelve the books you are using, but instead leave them on the tables or the trolleys.
