Textbooks…a case of change

Textbooks…a case of change

“The $300 textbook is dead”…Would this phrase alert you?

Online textbook rental services from companies like Chegg and Amazon have made it much easier to pay much less than for a traditional print textbook, and as a result publishing companies see their revenues to have fallen significantly.

Trying to find their way out of this crisis, textbook giant Pearson makes major shift away from print to digital. The company recently announced that all future updates to its 1,500 U.S. titles will occur digitally, a move that will push the academic publishing industry into the 21st century and save students money by ending lengthy and expensive print revisions.

The publisher said it will focus on updating its digital products more frequently, offering artificial intelligence capabilities, data analytics and research to help drive down college costs for students.

Let’s see if this will be a general shift to the textbook publishing landscape, especially from companies (like Pearson) who have been criticized for years for the rising prices of textbooks.
