                                          Issue: 2019 - 5
Welcome

With the start of the semester break, the Library has been silenced. There are few users here and there. The main door welcomes fewer people. We receive less questions at our service points. The phones rings less frequently.

Although we miss you, this is the only time for the Library to get ready for the Spring Semester. New projects and services are in progress.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a relaxing semester break.

We look forward to February 4th to meet you again.

ANAMED Library Talk Series

ANAMED Library Talk Series

In 2018, ANAMED Library opened its doors to many researchers within the scope of “ANAMED Library Talks” and hosted valuable names, scholars who are conducting research on various geographies and historical periods. The talk series has started with the ANAMED fellow Rustam Shukurov in April and continued with Lynn Jones in May. Ahmet Ersoy and Deniz Türker, the editors of the book titled “Ottoman Arcadia: The Hamidian Expedition to the Land of Tribal Roots (1886): Ömer M. Koç Collection” and the publication coordinator Özge Ertem Artvinli signed one more wonderful talk. As a joint organization of ANAMED and Tarih Vakfı, Library Talks continued in July with Edhem Eldem (Boğaziçi University / Collège de France). In his talk he mentioned the historiography profession, historiography and the Ottoman history which he addresses in his new book. The summer days ended with Brigitte Pitarakis’s talk on the Byzantine healing practices. She gave examples of healing centers in Istanbul and Anatolia, physicians and saints, medical literature and pharmacy.

In September, the Library hosted Saadet Özen who is a historian, an author, a professional guide, translator and the guide of BiblioPera tours in Beyoğlu. She talked about tourists, travelers, history of travel. In October, talks moved to another geography and time. Alexis Rappas talked about his book titled "1930s Cyprus: The British Colonial Rule and the Roots of the Cyprus Conflict" (London, IB Tauris, 2014)in which he explores British colonial attempts at social engineering by adopting a comparative approach. Later on during October, the Library happily hosted Zeynep Çelik once more. In her talk, she presented a critical evaluation of the visual arts in the intellectual area, pioneered by Edward Said's Orientalism (1978). She discussed the interaction of Said's groundbreaking study, especially with the field of architectural history, and traced the contradictory intellectual and academic developments within the last 40 years. The talk series of 2018 ended with Zafer Toprak’s talk. In his talk, he mentioned titles from his book "İnkılap ve Travma 1908-1928” and continued under the subject until 1938.

ANAMED Library Talks will continue as a joint organization of ANAMED and Tarih Vakfı in 2019. You can follow our talks on the ANAMED website and ANAMED Library Twitter account @ANAMEDLibrary.

Updated Mendeley Training

Updated Mendeley Training at Koç University Hospital!

Mendeley is a software that helps you collaborate with other researchers online, manage your references on your research paper easily with features that generate bibliographies automatically, import papers from other research software, find relevant papers based on what you're reading, and access your papers from anywhere online. Koç University has managed to acquire a license for the Mendeley Institutional Edition for all faculty, staff, and students so this tool is FREE. You can start creating your MIE account from www.mendeley.com when you are connected to KU Network.

Suna Kıraç Library offers you a completely new Mendeley training experience now. We have updated all the content and present it in a new structure to all users. In a nutshell, it consists of two parts: the Basic and Advanced level trainings with a subject guide titled "Mendeley Institutional Edition: Basic Level Training" the guide is shared before the class and a practice sheet is delivered to the participants during the training.

We already had the chance to successfully complete our first “Mendeley Basic Level Training” with a group of twenty-five doctors, faculty members and students at Koç University Hospital earlier this month. If you want to attend one of the next sessions scheduled in the following weeks, please visit our Instructions and Seminars page via the Library’s homepage.

Koç University Suna Kıraç Library New Digital Collections:
Ankara State Conservatory

Koç University VEKAM hosts the collection of the State Conservatory of Ankara (Musiki Muallim Mektebi) which is known as one of the first State Conservatory of the Republic of Turkey. Musiki Muallim Mektebi was foundend in 1924 and Osman Zeki Üngör was the first director of the Conservatory. The Conservatory consists of two basic departments: music and performing arts.

Musiki Muallim Mektebi which was converted into the Ankara State Conservatory in 1936 still functions as a Conservatory. The collection includes the student applications and the Institution’s correspondence. The material in the collection plays an important role in terms of reflecting the educational progress between 1925 - 1956.

The collection’s digitalization is an ongoing process but we would like to announce that the student application letters of 1934s are now available online. The digitization of the collection is planned to be completed in the following few years.
