Welcome

End of 2018

The Library was a hub of activities this fall, receiving requests for more library instructions and arranging them, many in collaboration with Faculty members. In addition, the Library organized and hosted: a weekly event with the participation of Greek and Turkish Academic Librarians, an event for the International Open Access Week and a 2-day event for the International Games Week. As well, the Library participated in celebrating Koç University's 25th Year with an astonishing Digital Collection that illuminates the history of the University (Koç University Collection of Institutional Memory). As always, the Library makes sure there is sufficient study place for all users and continues the efforts to make more necessary improvements in this direction.

Finals are just around the corner. No need to panic though, as your Library is the place you can study, work on group projects and most importantly, seek research assistance from the experienced staff.

As for the Faculty members, please note that we are working in order to assist your teaching, support your research and provide you with tools, services and resources.

Last but not least Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Koç University Digital Collections: A New AKMED Stereoscopic Glass Slide Collection is Now Available!

Koç University Digital Collections presents a new AKMED Stereoscopic Glass Slide Collection, accessible in December 2018. This collection, housed in the archive of Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Center for Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED), consists of glass slides that capture various ancient sites of Anatolia, including Didim, Miletus, Hierapolis and Aphrodisias during the ship tours and cultural excursions throughout the Mediterranean Sea that took place in the years between 1896 and 1912. These archaeological trips left us stereoscopic glass slides, being representative of the 19th century technology at the time, yet very rare pieces of archival materials as of today. The digitized collection is available here.

Plan S: The Latest Push for Open Access in Europe

Plan S was announced on September 4th, 2018 by cOAlition S, a group comprised of the European Commission, the European Research Council, and 11 European national funders. It is an ambitious initiative that aims to ensure (by 2020) immediate open access publication of research funded by national funding organizations.

Plan S states: “After 1 January 2020 scientific publications on the results of research funded by public grants provided by national and European research councils and funding bodies, must be published in compliant Open Access Journals or on compliant Open Access Platforms.” Read more at the https://www.scienceeurope.org/coalition-s/

The plan requires open-access publishing, even banning hybrid publishing. This eliminates the potential for scientists funded by cOAlition S members to publish in 85% of journals, including leading publications Nature and Science.

Warning on proposed WIPO broadcast treaty

Unless the proposed WIPO treaty on the protection of television broadcast organizations has robust mandatory user rights, access to broadcast material in libraries for uses such as research and study, civic education and community information will be irrevocably harmed.

“It will become more difficult for libraries to clear rights to show TV documentaries and live broadcast events, for example, and it will be more costly because libraries and other publicly funded institutions will have to pay for the privilege,” noted Teresa Hackett. “As a result, access to broadcasts of high social and historical value to teachers, students and the general public will be reduced.”

Teresa Hackett, EIFL Copyright and Libraries Program Manager Appraising the WIPO Broadcast Treaty and its Implications on Access to Culture, Geneva, October 3-4, 2018.
